What are the treatment options for Macular Degeneration or AMD?

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration

A: Age Related Macular Degeneration is very common and it is actually the leading cause of vision loss in adults over the age of 60. With your early symptoms you may have noticed a slight loss of your central vision, as the disease affects the macula which is in turn responsible for central vision and allows fine details to be clearly seen.

Unfortunately, there is no proven form of treatment for the dry form of AMD. However, there are treatments that may help reduce the impact or to slow the progression of the disease. For example, antioxidant vitamins and zinc supplementation, as well as consuming dark leafy greens and colorful fruits and vegetables are helpful steps you can take in your everyday lifestyle. Also, keeping an Amsler-Grid at home to regularly check your vision will help you determine if your sight begins to worsen. For severe vision loss, there are treatments such as Anti-VEGF injections, Photodynamic therapy, and laser surgery.

As always, be sure to have routine eye exams and talk with your California Retina Consultants eye doctor about what treatment plans would be best for you.
